When I set out to write Chasing Tropical Ice, I wanted to craft a story that resonates on multiple levels—thrilling readers with a gripping feminist thriller while also highlighting the resilience of women and the intricacies of human relationships. Augusta and Kaye, the protagonists of my novel, embody these qualities, making them not just survivors but fighters for justice and truth.
Strong Female Protagonists: Augusta and Kaye
Augusta, a former journalist with a knack for uncovering truths, begins her journey battling a creative block that silences her voice. Kaye, a retired Air Force pilot, finds solace in her garden, nurturing life after years of chaos. Together, they’ve built a tranquil life in the mountain town of Boquete, Panama—a region celebrated for its lush highlands and vibrant culture. But their peaceful existence is disrupted when a woman on the run arrives, plunging them into a world of danger, smuggling, and secrets. The quiet safety of Boquete becomes the backdrop for their fight for justice and survival.
These characters were inspired by my admiration for women who persist—those who navigate life’s challenges with courage and resilience. Their struggles, set against the backdrop of international intrigue, mirror real-world issues faced by women today, making Augusta and Kaye relatable heroines.
Themes of Feminism and Justice
At its core, Chasing Tropical Ice is a feminist thriller that weaves suspense and unexpected twists with themes of power, exploitation, and the courage to stand against injustice. Augusta and Kaye are not passive players in this story—they are active protagonists, using their wit and bravery to confront the dangers they face.
As the plot unfolds, readers will encounter real-world issues such as the blood diamond trade, human trafficking, and environmental destruction caused by unchecked greed. Having lived in Boquete for over 20 years, I’ve experienced its charm and complexities firsthand. From misty mornings on Volcán Barú to bustling markets filled with life and color, Panama’s highlands provide the perfect backdrop for a tale of mystery and resilience. My aim was to capture the soul of this beautiful country in a way that pulls readers into its world.
